Where to Stay in Usambara Mountains
There is a wide range of accommodation to choose from that Lushoto is offering to travellers and tourists, from ground camping to mid-range Hotels. Some of the accommodation can be found at online platforms and others cant be found online. Below are the very few selected accommodation that has our recommendation though you can still check online for your choice and preferences.
MAGAMBA FOREST CAMPING
If you’re looking to stay more closer to the nature and you love camping in a bonfire while having a barbeque then we recommend staying at this tranquil place. Staying at this campsite you have access to visit Kiguluhakwewa peak 1,840masl located 100 meters, German cave 250 meters, Mdananda peak 1km, Birds watching, Bar onsite, Toilets and hot shower onsite, Food onsite, Free parking ground and solar lights inside your tents. This accommodation to date can accommodate only 20 campers
How to reach
This accommodation is located inside the Magamba nature reserve which is 16km from Lushoto bus terminal reachable by well paved road till the camping ground. You have option to hire a Taxi from Lushoto bus terminal for TZS 35,000 or a most common African motorcycle ride for TZS 8,000. You can shorten the distance by not dropping at Lushoto bus terminal instead proceed and ask the bus conductor to drop you off at Mazinde St. Mary Secondary School. This will be possible if you have travelled by direct buses from Arusha/Moshi or from few buses that shuttle Dar es salaam to Mtae/Mlalo towns. This drop-off will leave you with 6km to reach the camping site whilst the transfer can only be done by motorcycle as no taxi is available here.
ANMUT HOSTEL
Anmut Hostel is located along Lushoto town to Magamba tarmac road bordered to Magamba nature reserve which is 6km from Lushoto town. The remoteness of the Hostel location offers an ideal retreat for tourists, business and leisure travellers who seek a place away from an urban area, the hustle and bustle of modern life, the area is dominated by calm weather, lush forestry, marvellous escarpments, rare birds and colobus monkeys. The area has been chosen due to its existing nature and infrastructure as most means of transportation is easily accessible. It is an ideal and prime place to stay. 500 meters from the Lodge area there is a historical symbol of the German Rest House constructed during colonial rule far back in the 1880s. The Germans were attracted by the weather that was almost similar to Europe and decided to set a base there. The hostel has larger room space and comfortable mattresses all self-contained where below are the available room types:-Private double bedrooms, Twin bedrooms, Triple bedrooms and Dormitory rooms The hostel offers an a la carte or American breakfast. Guests at Anmut Hostel can enjoy cycling nearby, or make the most of the garden. While at Anmut Hostel you can easily go to most attractions found in the Usambara mountains:- Hike to Magamba Nature Reserve, German cave, Kiguluhakwewa peak, Irente viewpoint, Kisasa & Mkuzu waterfalls and an ideal place to start 3 days hike to Mtae.
How to reach
You have option to hire a Taxi from Lushoto bus terminal for TZS 20,000 or a most common African motorcycle ride for TZS 3,000. You can also board a Daladala (passenger min van) at Lushoto bus terminal that goes to either Magamba village, Kwemakame or Mlalo and ask your driver to drop you at Anmut Hostel. The transfer fare is between TZS 2,000 - 3,000 per person. NOTE: No Daladala service after 7:00pm and they sometimes delay to move as they need to get full to start the journey. You can waive the transfer costs by not dropping at Lushoto bus terminal instead proceed and ask the bus conductor to drop you off right at Anmut Hostel grounds. This will be possible if you have travelled by direct buses from Arusha/Moshi or from few buses that shuttle Dar es salaam to Mtae/Mlalo towns.
